Measuring guide

How to measure your artwork

All you need is a tape measure and a minute. Inches or centimetres — use whichever you have.

  1. 01

    Measure your artwork

Lay it flat and measure the piece itself — the paper, canvas or fabric you want framed.

  2. 02

    Width — left to right

Run the tape across the top edge, from one side to the other.

  3. 03

    Height — top to bottom

Run the tape down one side, from the top edge to the bottom.

  4. 04

Write it as width × height

For example 12 × 16 in, or 30.5 × 40.6 cm. Round to the nearest ¼ inch or ½ cm.

Is it a standard paper size?

Most prints and certificates are A4, A3 or A2. If yours is one of these, you already have your measurements.

21 × 29.7 cm

A3

11.7 × 16.5 in

29.7 × 42 cm

A2

42 × 59.4 cm

No tape needed — you'll choose a print size on screen and see the measurements before you order.

Sending us a physical piece?

A close estimate is fine. Our team re-measures it when we collect it, so the frame always fits.

Matting

Mat or no mat?

A mat is the card border between the frame and your artwork. It's optional, but it changes how a piece looks and how well it lasts.

Without a mat

  • The frame sits right against the artwork
  • Bold and modern — the piece fills the frame
  • The artwork touches the acrylic

With a mat

  • A border of space draws the eye to the artwork
  • Smaller pieces look bigger and more finished
  • A small gap keeps the artwork off the acrylic

Why a mat is worth it

It frames the view

The space around the artwork gives your eye a place to rest, so the piece itself stands out, not the wall behind it.

It protects the artwork

The mat holds the artwork slightly away from the acrylic, so it can't press against it, stick to it or trap moisture over time.

It's made to last

Our mats are acid-free conservation board. They won't yellow, and they won't stain or damage the artwork they touch.

Three ways to mat

You'll choose one when you customise your frame.

No mat

The frame goes straight around the artwork, edge to edge, for a clean, contemporary look.

Best for

Posters & large printsCanvasBold, modern pieces

Classic mat

A mat board with a window cut to fit. It overlaps the artwork's edges slightly and holds it neatly in place.

Best for

PhotographsPrints & paintingsCertificates

Floating mat

The artwork is mounted on top of the mat, so every edge stays visible and it appears to float inside the frame.

Best for

Torn or hand-cut edgesTextiles & fabricSigned-to-the-edge work

Choose your mat width

Four widths, measured on each side of the artwork. Shown here to scale around the same 8 × 10 in piece.

Thin

1 in · 2.5 cm

A slim border that keeps the look close to no mat.

Standard

2 in · 5 cm

Balanced and easy — suits most pieces and rooms.

Wide

3 in · 7.5 cm

More breathing room for a calm, gallery feel.

Extra wide

4 in · 10 cm

A statement border that makes small pieces feel grand.

A mat adds its width to every side.

An 8 × 10 in artwork with a 2 in Standard mat becomes 12 × 14 in before the frame.
