A4, A3, A2 and A1 frame sizes
Certificates, posters and many art prints use international paper sizes. These are the ones we frame most:
| Size | Inches | Centimetres |
|---|---|---|
| A4 | 8.3 × 11.7 in | 21 × 29.7 cm |
| A3 | 11.7 × 16.5 in | 29.7 × 42 cm |
| A2 | 16.5 × 23.4 in | 42 × 59.4 cm |
| A1 | 23.4 × 33.1 in | 59.4 × 84.1 cm |
Which frame size fits my photo?
Match the shape first, then the size. Every photo has a shape, called its aspect ratio, and picking a size with the same shape means nothing gets cropped.
- Most phone photos are 4:3. Sizes with the same shape: 6×8, 12×16, 18×24.
- Most camera (DSLR) photos are 3:2. Sizes with the same shape: 4×6, 8×12, 12×18, 20×30.
- Square photos (1:1) suit 8×8, 10×10 or 12×12.
When you upload a photo, you see it at each size before you order, so you can check the crop.

How big should a frame be for my wall?
- Above a sofa or bed, aim for a frame (or group of frames) about two-thirds the width of the furniture.
- Hang it so the centre sits around 57–60 in (145–152 cm) from the floor — roughly eye level.
- Pieces seen from across a room need to be bigger than pieces seen up close on a desk.
- Leave 6–10 in (15–25 cm) between the bottom of the frame and the furniture.
Remember: a mat makes the frame bigger
A mat adds its width to every side. An 8×10 in photo with a 2 in mat becomes 12×14 in before the frame moulding. Read more in our guide to mats.

My piece isn't a standard size
That's what custom framing is for. Measure the artwork itself, width then height, and enter those numbers — the frame is made to fit. Our custom framing page has a step-by-step measuring guide.
