Custom framing, explained: how it works and when it's worth it

Ready-made frames fit standard sizes. Custom framing fits your piece. Here's what the difference means for how it looks and how long it lasts.

A ready-made frame asks your photo or artwork to fit it. A custom frame is cut to fit your piece — its exact size, its colours and the room it's going to live in.

What is custom framing?

Custom framing means the frame, mat and glazing are made to order for one specific piece. The moulding is cut to your measurements, the mat window is sized to your artwork, and everything is assembled by hand. Nothing is stretched, cropped or squeezed to suit a standard size.

It works for almost anything you'd want on a wall: phone photos, prints, paintings on paper, stretched canvas, textiles, certificates and keepsakes. You can see every option on our custom framing page.

How custom framing works at Madewall

There are two ways in, depending on whether your piece is digital or physical.

  1. 01Digital photos: upload your photo, choose a print size and frame, and we print it on archival paper, frame it and deliver it.
  2. 02Physical artwork, canvas or textiles: enter the size, choose your frame, and schedule a doorstep pickup in Bengaluru. We frame it and bring it back.
  3. 03Every frame is hand-finished and checked before it leaves the studio, then packed to travel safely.

Is custom framing worth it?

If the piece matters to you, usually yes. Cheap frames often use acidic card and plain glass, which yellow paper and let sunlight fade colours over a few years. A custom frame protects the piece as well as displaying it.

It is also the only real option for non-standard sizes — an old family photo, a painting from a local artist, or a canvas that doesn't match any shop frame.

A frame should make you look at the piece, not at the frame.

What affects the price of a custom frame?

  • Size: larger pieces need more moulding, mat board and acrylic.
  • Frame style: profile width and finish change the material cost.
  • Mat: adding a mat, and its width, adds to the finished size.
  • Service: printing a digital photo, or collecting a physical piece.

You see the full price at your exact size before you order — see our pricing for how it's calculated.
